A twist of fate and a little bit of luck connected me to Jason & Leah — a wonderful couple that moved from the midwest to Oregon during the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. That story starts during a trip to Oregon to explore with one of my best friends. When we arrived, I messaged our Turo host for recommendations in the Portland area and he happened to mention somewhere he’d been with his fiancée. I knew right then that I had to shoot my shot. I’ve always wanted to photograph the iconic Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach and if this couple was down for it, the tide schedules matched up perfectly for that week. Thankfully, J&L are some of the most adventurous, spontaneous people I’ve ever met. They accepted and we got to planning their Cannon Beach engagement photos.
Despite it being the end of October in one of the rainiest regions of the country, we lucked out with the weather for their session. On top of the natural awe-inspiring beauty of the beach itself, the Oregon coast was showing off with one of the most gorgeous sunsets I’ve ever seen. As an added bonus, these two were perfect in front of the camera. They leaned into the the magic of the evening, committing to every bit and having fun with me and my friend on the beach. After years of manifesting a session just like this one, Jason & Leah helped me bring it to life. I’m convinced that I have lucky girl syndrome. (If you aren’t chronically online like me, here’s a link to learn more about this phenomenon)
Like all modern romances, Tinder brought Jason and Leah together. They barely chatted on the app before deciding to set a date and time for their first date. Let’s set the scene: it was a Sunday evening and Leah had worked all day. She was considering bailing at the last minute, but decided to push through — and thank goodness she did! Right away, she found him to be quite handsome, charming, funny, and a great listener and conversationalist. After that, they were inseparable. Looking back, they laugh at how obsessed they were with one another. But who can blame them? With so much in common, so much chemistry, and conversation that never got old… What more can you ask for?
About 8 months in, COVID hit and they decided to move in together. Within another year, they were uprooting their lives in the Midwest for a new adventure in the Pacific Northwest. They’d visited Portland earlier in their relationship, falling in love with all of the diverse nature in the area. Not many places in the states have rainforests, ocean beaches, deserts, and mountains all within a couple hours drive. They were also drawn to the allure of no snow — my midwestern soul can relate to that! But it wasn’t long before they found themselves back in the snow, buying a house in the forest of Mount Hood. In their new home town, they took up skiing and golfing.
They tied the knot in a cabin on the side of Mount Hood, surrounded by their closest friends and family. While I did photograph their Cannon Beach engagement photos, they already had an incredible wedding photographer by the time we connected.
The Oregon Coast is one of the most incredible places I’ve ever visited, making for a stunning backdrop for couples who enjoy nature or want an adventurous setting for their engagement photos.
