When thinking about some of my favorite weddings of all time — which is a long list — Cassie and Jamie’s Dayton Steam Plant Wedding comes to mind. It was in the fall of 2022, a very busy wedding season for wedding professionals with the backlog from COVID-19. But the Irvines know how to throw one hell of a party and it was a breath of fresh air. These days, I’m thankful to call these clients my friends.
Initially, Jamie and Cassie considered eloping as they wanted their day to be an intimate celebration of their love. But their love of family and friends won out and they decided to plan for a wedding on the smaller, more intimate side of things. When I met with them, their intentionality for the day stood out. They wanted a first look and intimate vow reading with their immediate families and wedding parties present. As a true romantic, Cassie said she was looking forward to their first dance the most. For dinner, they had plans for a taco bar — which my taco & marg loving self was in full support of. They wanted lots of alone time for portraits and were hoping for a gorgeous sunset. The vibes were natural, romantic, and comfortable. I knew right away that their intentional planning style was going to be a great pairing with my documentary style of work.
Through their planning, they had one major setback. I remember it like was yesterday. I received an email from Cassie letting me know that her original venue, Lockbox 290, was closing down. This was 8 months before their big day was scheduled, in one of the busiest wedding months of the year. Thankfully, the fantastic team over at The Steam Plant was able to step in and save the day. They moved their date to the Sunday, keeping all over their original vendors.
Cassie and Jamie met while working at a restaurant together. They had the typical food service love story — Jamie was in the kitchen and Cassie was a server. Cassie was trying to flirt with Jamie, but being shy, he wouldn’t even look her in the eye. Even so, he managed to get her number and they hit it off. After being together for over three years, they got engaged while on a vacation to Florida.
